yonatan’s random thoughts

... because I can.

a short one (about cyberpunk - that's soo last millenium!)

I have to thank Naama for showing me this one,
I'm kind of addicted to it. (bat for lashes. what does it stand for?!?!)

and on another topic a year after finally reading "neuromancer", I'm adding another level to my cyberpunk education and reading "islands in the net".

Cyberpunk is dead, but it actually progressed. like new wave to punk, and like electroclash to synthpop (ok, don't lash out on me please!), the descendants of cyberpunk are still among us. I guess the 90's internet explosion is responsible for making cyberpunk so popular at the time.
and movies such as Matrix or even the latest terminator with it's evil skynet are grandchildren of such books and the culture around them.

to wrap things up, here's a clip that is like caveman drawings in todays tech-apocalypse standards.
go billy!

Morrissey is coming!

yes. Morrissey is coming to perform a concert in Tel Aviv this friday!
I'm still not sure if I'm going - a bit expensive and my legs hurt too much to stand a whole concert at the moment.
but still, I'm honoured that he thinks of us. go morrissey!

duets dance performance, cholent, and more

I have many reasons to be happy this saturday.
first, I had vegetarian cholent yesterday, and it was delicious.
not really something I had at home every weekend - my parents first cooked it as exotic food when I was a teenager, but it's definitely a loved national food in israel, alongside hummus and falafel/shawarma, much like heinz beans to the irish :)

second matter - I went to a good dance performance at the Suzanna Dellal center last night - Duets by Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor. (here's a link to an interview with some pictures and videos I googled) I love how they use some classic dance elements and theatrical gestures mixed into their own dance language, and also the use of music to enhance the drama, and guilt free use of humor (something sometimes lacking in dance). it's a dance I think many people could enjoy.
I was especially surprised by Noga Golan's role - on "Jorona" (llorona) she had the role of a child, which she played in a remarkably convincing manner. on Duets she is a cliché of the courted ultra feminine woman, and I couldn't believe how well she performed it, although I admit some of my surprise may have been related with the former role.

that's it for now. peace and love.

music for the pooped

I'm pooped. I feel completely energyless.
luckily I watched a peepshow DVD yesterday (the second season), it was very refreshing.
and to revive myself this morning I will listen to kimya dawson. one of my favorites from "remember that I love you" is this song:
and this video is one of the reasons I think youtube is soooo great. I find myself coming back to it like a pilgrim.

grrrrrrrl power

I'd like to make a tribute to strong women, so here's a couple of songs that's been on my mind for the last days:
(don't know how long these links will last, but here goes)

the slits recorded this great cover sometime in the late 70's. still sounds very fresh:

[the evil powers of the internet have removed the movie from youtube. I will leave it here as a silent memento to a fleeting moment] here's a link to the song on deezer.

I heard this song by lesbians on ecstacy in some movie, and I looove it: (I totally ignored the video though)

and last but not least - screamclub with peaches - fine as fuck. pure pleasure.

feel free to comment with some more grrrrrl power.

Firefox extensions for developers

yet another quality post the world doesn't need, but here goes:

y'all probably know and love firebug, YSlow, Web developer and LiveHTTPHeaders.
I guess I use Firebug 98% of the time, and use the others mentioned on more rare occasions (except for the 'clear cache' from Web developer. firebug should add this. or did they? am I just too slow?)

a few of you might not know these sweet addons:
* firecookie which lets you do a whole lot to and with cookies from firebug
* rainbow which adds javascript syntax highlighting to firebug (you'll have to log in to use this one since it's considered experimental)
* firePHP which allows logging from php directly to the firebug console.

didn't try those but they might come in handy:
* jiffy if you really want to profile your javascript from firebug
* firebugCodeCoverage - might be nice to discard of old stale unused code

what I'd REALLY want* is a firebug debug client for server side languages. well, PHP will be a good start. mmm...
we could start by wrapping the debugging library with an HTML interface. server to browser - we can send a special response header (like firePHP already does, and like the JSON headers). browser to server - not sure how messages should travel - perhaps via another separate HTTP connection? suggestions welcome. sounds like a tasty project to me. (well, I'll never have time for it :( )

* what I REALLY REALLY want is a light saber, enough money to travel around the world for a few years, an apartment in tel aviv (I'll settle for a 3.5 rooms apartment if I have to), world peace etc.

jerusalem 2008

my friends went to demonstrate in Pisgat Ze'ev, a suburb of jerusalem, against a beating of two palestinian teenagers that took place near the mall there a while ago.
they were attacked by a few dozen jewish kids on holocaust day's eve, after the youngsters in the neighborhood sent each other SMS's in the fashion of "everybody with jewish blood should come and kick the arabs out of our neighborhood, on holocaust day's eve" etc.
I had to smile about the crooked symbolism.

anyway, my friend was standing there holding a sign, and occasionaly talking to people and getting some interesting responses. for instance:
a young woman pauses to read the sign. thinks. concentrates, then gives my friend the finger and goes.
a guy that tried to beat them up but was immediately pulled away by a covert policeman (good on the police! :) )
and the best of all - a conversation between too young men:
A - see this cocksucker? you can tell he's a fag from tel aviv
B - yeah, he likes to get it in the ass.
A - he should be beat up.
B - yeah, why don't you beat him up?
A - I would gladly, but I don't want to cause trouble to that police man (points at a police man) - I used to go to school with him.

lucky that policeman was there, and we could laugh about this over beer...
(yeah, and I wasn't in that demonstration. missed on all the fun).

not so well trained, or the complaints platform.

I just had a great understanding.
snappy systems that allow you to publish stuff quickly without thinking twice, such as twitter and more so posterous, are the perfect foundations for a COMPLAINTS PLATFORM.
well, twitter is something people complain ABOUT, but I mean we can easily complain about the world.

for isntance firefox. while I was composing this post, it crashed just like that, and I had to start over. you will never read the original post which is lost for all eternity.
I love firefox, but the fact it crashes many times a day now that I've upgraded really cools me off (ok, it really PISSES ME OFF). I mean, how hard is it to catch an exception? (I'm suspecting it's some add on).
so you see - I already have one complaint.

and the original complaint: I'm an enthusiastic public commuter. I also love riding my bicycle in the city. there, I've said it.
today the train was 10 minutes late. "only 10 minutes?" I hear you say. "when I was young, the train would be 2 days late, and it would also suck 5 hours from your life using a special device on arriving!". however, as any good programmer knows, latency propagates. being 10 minutes late meant I missed the ride from the trains station, and arrived ~30 minutes later than I intended. who knows, this butterfly's wing flap could eventually cause a collosal economy crash and recession. mark my words and keep reading the papers in the next months!

anyway, I'd like to invite y'all to complain by commenting on this post. I promise to consider collecting some good complaints from the internet for you for my next post.
peace and love.

bring bright eyes to israel

some stale performances are coming to israel this summer.
suddenly, while listening to bright eyes' song "hit the switch"
which you can also get a taste of here

I realized not only that this is a great song to fix my mood when I'm down,
but that I should also expand my acquaintance with bright eyes music,
past the "digital ash in a digital urn" CD.

I did a quick search on boyamanyak to find out if other people in israel would like to see bright eyes on stage here,
and found out I'm in a good company, not to say crowd!
http://www.boyamanyak.com/artist.php?artist=46

so, who's going to pick up the glove?

hallelujah, that's too easy

I have to bow before the good people at posterous.
while I maintain my site and it's blog at www.traxtuff.com,
I was too busy to open another blog - something I've been wanting to do for a while.
not that it takes more than 2 minutes with a handful of services,
but the posterous (non-)interface is somehow too easy to resist.
have I found the place where I will share my mediocre thoughts with the world?
time will tell.
